What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crown restorations prior to placement

Dental crowns are advanced restoration options that fit over the top of a damaged or decayed tooth. This allows us to fully repair the shape and structure of damaged teeth. It also protects the remaining healthy structure from being further damaged. Because traditional restorations used metal alloys that may contain mercury and other toxic elements, Dr. Silver typically recommends the use of the more biocompatible all-ceramic materials. In addition to minimizing risk of exposure to toxins, all-ceramic materials also look and feel more like healthy, natural smiles.

When Would I Need a Dental Crown?

There are a number of reasons we may recommend a dental crown restoration, including:

  • To repair tooth damage or decay
  • To protect a root canal treated tooth
  • To replace a lost filling
  • To support a fixed bridge tooth replacement prosthetic
  • To replace a single tooth when attached to a dental implant

What are Fixed Bridges?

Fixed Bridges are used to replace one or more consecutive missing teeth. They are crafted using dental crowns to support a replacement tooth or teeth. The crowns are attached to both sides of the replacement teeth. Then, they are placed over teeth on either side of the lost tooth to recreate a healthy, natural looking smile.

How are Restorations Placed?

Dental crowns and bridges are place in two trips to our office. During your first treatment appointment, we’ll remove damaged tooth structure. A small amount of enamel is also removed all the way around the tooth. This makes it possible for the crown to fit over the top of your tooth without adversely affecting surrounding teeth. Once your tooth or teeth are prepared, impressions are captured that our dental lab can use to craft a custom crown or bridge. To protect your smile between visits, we place a temporary dental crown or bridge. When the lab returns your final restoration, we’ll call to schedule your second treatment appointment. During the follow up visit, we simply remove your temporary restoration and place the custom dental crown or fixed bridge.

How do I Care for my Dental Restorations?

Because we typically recommend that patients use ceramic crowns and bridges, you may need to make some changes to your daily hygiene routine. While you should continue to brush twice each day and floss daily, you may want to use different hygiene products. Softer toothbrushes and less abrasive toothpastes ensure minimal wear to the restorations. You may also want to use a waxed floss to avoid tugging around the edges of your crown or bridge that may dislodge it.
